Diary of a Divorcée
Love mixed with lies, relationships filled with turmoil, and marriages that sometimes lead to divorce are all part of life. The chemistry that happens between a man and woman has its own season in which it blossoms to grow or shrivels up to die. Four African American characters—Sydney Brown, Kameron Smith, Brielle Johnson, and Tyler Mathews—write their innermost thoughts while trying to maintain some form of a normal existence. These personal memoirs are filled with drama and comedy. Sydney Brown—dancer, director, and soon-to-be wife of millionaire Edward Dubois—somehow gets lost by falling in love with the already-married Kameron Smith. Mr. Smith is a talented music executive whose past artistic street hustle has turned into a lucrative career. Kameron Smith is an overall good family guy who starts off by trying to salvage his marriage, only to end up having an affair with Sydney. Both Sydney and Kameron exist in different worlds that could possibly have a chance to survive if the timing is right. Divorced attorney Tyler Mathews has finally met his worst nightmare—Brielle Johnson. At the first meeting, Mrs. Johnson seemed to be your typical rich ghetto fabulous, ‘yeah I trapped this ex-pro football player into marrying me by having three children’ type of woman. Mrs. Johnson struggles
with wanting acceptance from her in-laws, juggling three children’s schedules, alcohol, and the fact that Mr. Johnson left her for a bible-toting woman of the cloth. Along with keeping Mrs. Johnson’s high-profile case a priority, Mathew is trying to piece together his own life after ruining his marriage by sleeping with the enemy. Read along as all four characters give their own private views of life, love, sex, and the pursuit of happiness.

“Beyond I Do” is based on the novel Diary of a Divorcee written by Dr. Gaybrielle Jones-Mason. This play explores the life of five main characters. Dr. Thomas is a licensed psychiatrist, life coach, and relationship counselor. “Beyond I Do”, is more than a counseling service. “Beyond I Do” is a company created by Dr. Thomas for individuals to express, release and develop a plan of action for the future—Sydney, Kameron, Brielle, and Tyler who are all going through the divorce cycle. The divorce cycle has four stages: 1) the signs before marriage; 2) living within a bad marriage; 3) the divorce process; and 4) life after the storm. Each client/character has a different reason for requesting service for “Beyond I Do”. Therefore, travel along in this performance with Dr. Thomas to help each client through their crisis.
